THE HANDMAIDEN (Ah-ga-ssi)

The last Korean film I saw about a house servant was Sang Soo-Im's 2010 thriller "The Housemaid" with Do-yeon Jeon as the title servant. It told an interesting story of greed an lust while expressing Korean eroticism. It was a welcome break from the Korean horror films ("A Tale of Two Sisters", "The Ring Virus", "Phone") and drama ("The Yellow Sea", "The Classic") with an unexpected outcome.

This time director Chan-wook Park ("Old Boy", "Thirst") weaves a glorious tale of greed, deceit, lust, with a healthy portion of surreptitious eroticism with his film "The Handmaiden."

"The Handmaiden" is a gorgeously photographed, multi-layered sensuous thriller that sates every cinematic desire! It will easily be one of the ten best films of 2016.   -- GEOFF BURTON
