GEOFF BURTON'S 2017 BEST FILMS

This will be my last Year in Review and oh what a miserable movie year 2017 has been. Disappointment after disappointment; movies that could have been but missed the mark by a mile. LOTS of them! By now, I usually have 10-15 four crown films. This year only seven, so far. I'm holding out hope for Steven Spielberg's "The Post" and Paul Thomas Anderson's "Phantom Thread"....but we'll see.

THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI

"Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" is easily one of the top ten films of the year and is poised to receive nods for lead actress (Frances McDormand), support actor (Sam Rockwell and maybe Woody Harrelson) and original screenplay. -- GEOFF BURTON   -- GEOFF BURTON

THE SHAPE OF WATER

"The Shape of Water" is a fabulous tribute to filmmaking as it adds a sensual, romantic turn on age old stories with a Cold War flavor. Easily one of the ten best films of the year. -- GEOFF BURTON   -- GEOFF BURTON

MUDBOUND

"Mudbound" is one of the best ten films of 2017 with kudos to Mary J Blige as a support actress, Jonathan Banks as Support actor, Dee Rees as director and Rachel Morrison for cinematography. Bank on it! -- GEOFF BURTON   -- GEOFF BURTON

DARKEST HOUR

"Darkest Hour" is Oscar bait extraordinaire. It is dialogue rich with unmatched performances from the cast; most notably Gary Oldman in the lead. One of the best films of the year, so far! -- GEOFF BURTON   -- GEOFF BURTON

BLADE RUNNER 2049

"Blade Runner 2049" is quite simply one of the best films of 2017 and easily one of the best sequels ever made. Period. Everyone from Ryan Gosling down to Sylvia Hoeks are perfectly cast and perfectly developed. The visuals are more amazing than the original. -- GEOFF BURTON   -- GEOFF BURTON

DUNKIRK

"Dunkirk" is an amazing piece that plays as a fully immersed video game adventure where you feel the loss as well as the camaraderie of war. -- GEOFF BURTON   -- GEOFF BURTON

COCO

"Coco" is the best animated film of the year, which really isn't saying much considering the dearth of quality films this year. Disney/Pixar does a great job of relating Mexican culture to a vibrant, fun film. -- GEOFF BURTON   -- GEOFF BURTON

AFTER LOVE (L'Economie du couple)

"After Love" (L'Economie du couple) is one of the best depictions of a marriage that has no hope, a modern day "Kramer vs Kramer" but with the couple having to co-exist until their economies improve. -- GEOFF BURTON   -- GEOFF BURTON

MARJORIE PRIME

"Marjorie Prime" is an amazing story with strong performances by a very good group of veteran actors - most notably Lois Smith. Easily one of the most profound sci-fi films relating to the human condition of coping with aging. -- GEOFF BURTON   -- GEOFF BURTON

THE LITTLE HOURS

"The Little Hours" is the most genuinely funny film of the year so far. The writing and directing are spot on and the entire cast will have you rolling in the aisle with their irreverent look at a medieval convent. -- GEOFF BURTON   -- GEOFF BURTON

WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES

"War For The Planet Of The Apes" fantastically transfers the Earth from humans to apes as a sociological sci-fi thriller. The costuming is terrific, the writing his superb and, as he generally does, Woody Harrelson makes this good film even better. -- GEOFF BURTON   -- GEOFF BURTON

WONDER WOMAN

"Wonder Woman" is the shot in the arm that DC Comics needed if it is to continue trying to develop their League of Superheroes universe. Director Patty Jenkins does an exceptional job of bringing well nuanced characters and a well adapted story to the big screen. -- GEOFF BURTON   -- GEOFF BURTON

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE

"Thank You For Your Service" is an effective and touching look at the old saying "War is hell". Writer/director Jason Hall continues to give the gritty background of modern warfare and the toll it takes on everyone. -- GEOFF BURTON   -- GEOFF BURTON

LEGO BATMAN MOVIE

"The Lego Batman Movie" is not only a great sequel, it is also one of the best Batman films ever. Kudos to Chris McKay for keeping it fresh and non-stop funny while keeping an eye on what is making this franchise great. -- GEOFF BURTON   -- GEOFF BURTON
